Asset Accumulation and the Impact of Working Life Factors on Pensioner Poverty
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates the link between the incomes and wealth of pensioners and their working-life earnings levels. The proportionality predicted by a simple form of the life-cycle model is supported for pensioner couples and male single pensioners, but not for female single pensioners. In all cases working-life earnings level is found to have a strong influence on pensioner poverty. Pensioners’ wealth levels are found to be an important influence on their evaluations of their financial well-being given current income and the impact of working-life earnings on poverty is further strengthened when poverty is defined on the basis of wealth as well as current income. ∗ I am grateful to the Leverhulme Trust for financial support and to Martin Browning, Richard Disney and Peter Elias for helpful discussions. The British Household Panel Survey data used in the paper were originally collected by the ESRC Research Centre on Micro-social Change and were made available through The Data Archive.
